What We Offer

We offer accommodation, protection, care, exercise, entertainment, rehabilitation etc to our pupils. We are determined to become the best such facility in Cyprus!

What We Do

We work tirelessly to improve the lives of adults with mental disabilities and accompanying health issues they usually have, promote their inclusion and ensure they receive the support they so much rely on in order to lead fulfilling lives.

Those being cared for live in an environment of love, understanding, respect and acceptance and, more importantly, take part in programmes specially tailored to their needs.Opportunities are provided in terms of physical abilities and mental comprehension. They are also shown how to look after themselves, socialise with others and work in a community with other people.

Our Services and Programs

Margarita Liasidou Foundation provides a number of programmes with a view to improving the abilities, self respect, and confidence of disabled people. Activities include practical and creative exercises such as art, dance, music, gardening, woodwork, housework etc.

INDEPENDENCE SKILLS

Our pupils are taught how to dress themselves, eat with a knife and fork, wash their hands and face properly, bath themselves, use the toilet – in other words, to learn how to depend upon themselves as much as possible.

PRACTICAL SKILL BUILDING

We have regular classes where our pupils learn, amongst other things, how to make baskets, beautiful little stools (very much loved activity!), icons, candles and decorative flower arrangements. Twice a year, at Christmas and Easter, the results of their hard work are put on for sale at small bazaars organised by the Foundation.

EMPLOYMENT

A new programme instigated by the Foundation in 2001, means that some of the pupils are offered jobs in the community. Many of them work in the fruit department of a large supermarket and both the children and the employers are very happy indeed. We employ a coordinator of this crucial programme.

SOCIAL INTEGRATION

Pupils are given the opportunity to participate in shows and activities beyond the environment of the Foundation. These include organised excursions, visits to people’s homes, schools and other public places, and walks. They also help in cleaning the gardens belonging to the local community.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT

We have an in-house psychologist who offers her services voluntarily, giving psychological support not only to the pupils themselves, but also to their parents and care givers. This type of support is crucial, given the difficulties our pupils face.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

At the Margarita Liasidou Foundation specialised theraputic services like physiotherapy are offered. These are not restricted only to those pupils in the Foundation who need the treatment, but are also given to other people, with or without mental disability, from the age of one year.

We regularly help in providing treatment for people suffering from various syndromes, movement disorders, and mental paralysis and muscular problems.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS AND OTHER EVENTS

Some pupils go to the Special Olympic Games and we are so proud about our recent success in 2025. Their trainers are extremely proud of them when they come home with gold medals on their chests and big smiles on their faces.

THEATRE AND EVENTS

We regularly organise theatre performances with our pupils taking the central roles. This allows them to socially adjust in various environments, making it easier for them to feel a part of society. We participate in different public events for the purpose of making the public more aware and sensitive towards the intellectually disabled people.

FESTIVE EVENTS

Cyprus has many events around Christmas and Easter, and many families with mentally disabled members feel left out. That is why we organise fun days around these festivities where the Foundation building opens its doors to everyone and spreads the joy in the most inclusive way.

Assisted Living Project

Established in 2020 as a result of a much needed initiative of the current Management and a response to the acute need of the pupils, it opened its doors in 2020 to 5 children with very difficult fate. When left without a care of the primary guardian due to various reasons, our pupils are exposed and vulnerable, unable to take decisions and care for themselves.

So our foundation allocated a section of the building to create a safe, comfortable home environment where these pupils live and thrive. There is 24/7 assistance with everything they do – from self care to entertainment. We are very proud of this project and it is our plan to be able to accommodate more pupils there.
